IRON SKILLET FRIDAY

FOUR SURE THINGS TO KNOW FOR SURE

imageOHHH AND 2!
The Vikings have scored 19 points combined in losses to New Orleans and Miami after averaging nearly 30 points in the regular season in 2009. They have already lost a game at home -- 14-10 to the Dolphins on Sunday -- after going 9-0 in the Metrodome last year and Favre is coming off a performance in which he threw three interceptions and lost a fumble in the end zone that led to one of Miami's two touchdowns on the day. "I don't want to raise red flags," Favre said on Thursday. "We gotta get on the same page, because we're 0-2. We gotta find a way to get this thing going. I gotta make better decisions. I gotta play better." The Vikings are hoping to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2002 (0-4). Since Brett Favre started a full season in 1993, only one of his teams started 0-3 or worse. That was in 2005, when the Packers began 0-4 en route to a 4-12 season. Some good news for Vikings fans though, the Lions have lost 21 straight road games overall and 16 straight within the division, 1 shy of the most since the merger in 1970 (Raiders lost 17 straight from 2004-07).

imageMIAMI CRUSHES PITT
(19) Miami (FL) 31, Pittsburgh 3 - Jacory Harris throws for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns (8-10, 87 yards, 2 TD in 2nd half) as Miami beats Pittsburgh for the 7th straight time and for the 11th time in the last 12 games. Harris did throw 2 more interceptions, giving him 6 on the season (all coming in the last 2 games). The Hurricanes improve to 15-2 all-time in ESPN Thursday Night games. The ACC gets its 2nd win against a team from an automatic qualifying conference, with both of them coming against the Big East. Last Thursday, NC State beat Cincinnati. Last year's Big East Player of the Year Dion Lewis struggled again, rushing for just 41 yards on 12 carries for Pitt. The U outgained the Panthers 349-232. The Big East falls to 1-7 against teams from BCS conferences.

imageRAYS PULL WITHIN HALF-GAME OF YANKEES
Rays 10, Yankees 3 - Rays take the season series (10-8) from the Yankees for the second time in team history (other was 2005), and cut the Yankees AL East lead to 1/2 a game. B.J. Upton, Jason Bartlett and Carl Crawford combined to go 7-15 with 4 RBI in the top 3 slots in the batting order. David Price wins, is 4-0 in his last 5 road starts, 3-0 in 5 September starts. CC Sabathia loses for only the 2nd time in his last 18 home decisions, falls to 19-2 when getting at least 3 runs of support. Yankees have lost all 3 times that Sabathia has faced David Price. Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to a 2010-best 12 games. Yankees have lost their last 6 when facing a lefty starter. With Yankees loss, Twins now have best MLB record. The 63 runs the Rays scored this season in Yankee Stadium are the most that an opposing team has scored in a season at Yankee Stadium since the 1959 Red Sox scored 63 in 11 games.

imageBATTLE FOR THE IRON SKILLET
No one knows the names of the folks who created the Iron Skillet tradition, but it has been rumored that TCU and SMU fans originated this tradition back in the 1950s. During a pre game festivity an SMU fan was frying up some frog legs as a joke before the game. A TCU fan, seeing this desecration of the "frog", went over and told him that eating the frog legs was going well beyond the rivalry and that they should let the game decide who would get the skillet and the frog legs. TCU ended up winning the game and the skillet and the frog legs went to TCU. The tradition eventually spilled over into the actual game and the Iron Skillet is now passed to the winner. You can cook on your own iron skillet tonight when you watch the Horned Frogs battle the Mustangs at 8PM ET on ESPN. For the record, SMU's only win over a ranked opponent since 1996 came at the expense of No. 22 TCU in 2005, the last time the Mustangs won the Iron Skillet.

THREE RANDOM NUMBERS TO IMPRESS THREE RANDOM PEOPLE

50

(AWAY) 2-0

The Dolphins are the sixth team since 2000 to begin a season with back-to-back road victories. The other five teams during that period to start a season 2-0 with two road wins all went on to make the playoffs: 2001 Rams, 2003 Broncos, 2004 Seahawks, 2006 Saints and 2009 Vikings. The last team to have such a start and not reach the playoffs was the 1999 Steelers.

3

(#24) Oregon St at (#3) Boise St, 8 ET (ABC) - This is the first trip by the GameDay Crew to Boise. Oregon State has been a giant killer of late. The Beavers have won each of their last 3 games against AP top-3 teams, beating USC in 2008, California in 2007 and USC in 2006. Oregon State is playing at the GameDay location for the second time. The Beavers lost at LSU 22-21 in OT in 2004, when their kicker, Alexis Serna, missed three extra points. Boise State's 63-2 home record since the start of the 2000 season is best in FBS. Oregon State, is so committed to accuracy in preperation for this weekend's matchup that it spent $11,000 painting a practice field blue. Does that mean Boise State is already in Oregon State's head?

TWO CENTS WORTH

"After I accomplished 200 hits and I looked to the dugout, everyone was celebrating. They were showing congratulatory feelings. That's when I finally felt I could express my feelings in a good way and say I'm happy for what I've achieved."

Seattle's Ichiro said through a translator, after he became the first player with 10 straight 200-hit seasons Thursday, breaking his record with a single to center in the fifth inning of the Mariners' game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

"Grown men laughing at other grown men on the football field. That happened toward the end of the ball game last week. And it happens every time we play New England."

Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner, who is tired of the Buffalo Bills being used as a punch line. Whitner expressed his displeasure this week after saying he witnessed Green Bay players laughing at the Bills along the sideline during the Packers' 34-7 win last Sunday. And Whitner's all too familiar with the Patriots, saying their players have poked fun at the Bills during the course of New England's 13-game win streak against them.
