| PACK IT UP, PACK IT IN (Let me begin.) There's only one undefeated team left in the whole, entire NFC, and that team is the Chicago Bears. For that, they can thank Devin Hester. His 12th career punt/kickoff return for a touchdown (this one was a punt) tied him for second all-time in NFL history. (Watch out, Brian Mitchell. You should have set the bar higher than 13.) But more than that, they can thank Brian Urlacher, or maybe James Jones, or maybe Sir Isaac Newton, since Urlacher's hit caused Jones' fumble and the laws of physics kept the ball inbounds long enough for the Bears to pounce on it and set up the game-winning field goal. But even more than all of that, they can thank the Packers, or maybe the officials, or maybe all of the both of them, since Green Bay racked up 18 penalties (totaling 152 yards) to set a new high (low?) mark for the franchise in a single game. They broke a record that stood since the last time the Cubs reached the World Series. Call it 1945.

| IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA Donovan McNabb will return to the City of Brotherly Love this weekend, and to celebrate, the Phillies clinched the NL East, just like they did the last three years he was there. (Isn't that nice?) To do it, all Roy Halladay did was throw a two-hit shutout to pick up his 21st win of the season. It was his 14th win of the season within the division, more than any other pitcher within any division in the Wild Card era. And it came in his 320th career start, which more starts than any other active pitcher who has never started a postseason game. (So look for Brian Moehler to move to the top of that list once this postseason starts.)

| TRENTY PICK First, Trent Edwards lost his starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick. Then, Trent Edwards lost his job (period) with the Bills. So now, Trent Edwards is on waivers, and he'll stay there until 4:00 ET this afternoon. After that, he'll either be claimed, or be free (to do what he wants, any old time). But according to Chris Mortensen (or at least according to his two anonymous league executives), Edwards should expect to be claimed, and expect to be working either in Carolina, Jacksonville, Kansas City, San Francisco, Seattle, or New York (which is to say, New Jersey, which is to say with the Jets).

| VALPARAISO HEAT After yesterday's meet-and-greet with the media, the Miami Heat take their talents out of South Beach and up into the Panhandle to begin their preseason training camp. Technically, they'll be at Eglin Air Force Base, so technically, they'll be three miles southwest of Valparaiso, Florida. (So that's where SportsCenter will take our talents as well.) So that might help identify at least some of the flying objects at the base. At least the ones not flying around looking for nuclear weapons. Wait, what?

| 2 x 11 | Omar Infante came through for the Braves with a walk-off hit in the 11th against the Marlins last night. The same Omar Infante who beat the same Marlins with a walk-off hit in the 11th against the same Marlins on July 2. He's the only player in the major leagues with 2 extra-inning walk-off hits against one team this season. Meanwhile, the Braves have an MLB-best 13 walk-off wins this season, and 25 wins in their last at-bat. And this one lifted them to a half-game lead in the Wild Card race. | 1 | A.) The Padres fell 1 game back of the Giants in the NL West when they lost 1-0 to the Cubs. These things happen when you run into the buzzsaw known as the anger-managing Carlos Zambrano, who shut them out on three hits over seven innings. In fact, Big Z has allowed two runs or less and thrown five innings or more in ten straight starts - the most such starts by a Cubs pitcher since 1920, and the second most starts since 1900. B.) The magic number for the Reds to clinch the NL Central stands at 1, which means the champagne could be flowing tonight if they can beat the Astros, or if the Cardinals can't beat the Pirates. | 2-10, 5.91 | A.J. Burnett was knocked out during the third inning and charged with all seven of the runs allowed by the Yankees in their 7-5 loss to the Blue Jays. So in 23 games since September 3rd, Yankees starting pitchers are 2-10 with a 5.91 ERA. And of those 23 starts, only 4 times has a pitcher thrown 7 or more innings. (8 starts lasted less than 5 innings.) So don't, don't don't, let's start. (This is the worst part.) Recap | Highlights |

| "Had a chance to clinch a post season spot tonight with about 10,000 fans in the stands....embarrassing" David Price tweeted that after his Rays got shutout at home by the Orioles. (Then after that, he tweeted, "If I offended anyone I apologize I did not think it was gonna turn into this...") But still, is it more embarrassing than forgetting to put your mail truck in park? Orioles-Rays | Follow David Price on Twitter | Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor heavy traffic stays this courier. | "I think that the owners, and principally the commissioner, have decided that it's the way to go, and so the debate, such as it was, is over." Officially, nothing has changed. But Colts president Bill Polian seems to think that an 18-game NFL season is a "fait accompli". Read More | I am impressed by your English use of French. |
