| CENTRAL AMERICAN With all due respect to banana republics (and Banana Republic), the Minnesota Twins are hot (and and a fashionable pick) as summer turns to fall. They became the first team to clinch a playoff berth when they clinched the AL Central when they beat the Indians and when the A's beat the White Sox. It means that they've now clinched the AL Central six times in nine years. And it means that they're 45-18 since the All-Star break. That's tops in all of baseball. (That's what happens when you're also tops in batting average, second in runs per game, and second in team ERA average since the All-Star break.)

| CAN U DIG IT? With all due respect to the Riffs, Baseball Furies, and Mets, the Yankees are the most powerful gang in New York. They came out to play last night, building a 2.5-game lead over the Rays in the East by building a 5-0 lead over the Rays in the first and cruising to an 8-3 win. And they're also the most dramatic gang in New York. Because in the third, Jorge Posada hopped over to first after a pitch by James Shields hopped in the dirt. But was Posada really hit by the pitch? Was this really Derek Jeter the cheater all over again? Was it really much better than Cats? "We're in New York, we're also close to the theater district and more power to them," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. But the baseball gods still had their say. Because with two outs in the ninth, Posada was hit in the groin by a foul tip off of the bat of Evan Longoria. Posada was checked out by a professional and stayed in the game. All's well that ends well.

| VINCENT'S PRICE With all due respect to Michael Vick, who today resumes his preparations to restart under center for the Eagles on Sunday, the Wednesday NFL headlines figure to belong to Vincent Jackson, who today resumes his preparations to restart his career for anyone other than the Chargers. Jackson and the Chargers face a 4:00 ET deadline to agree to a trade out of San Diego. If they do, he'll only have to miss the first four games of the season. If they don't, he'll only be able to be traded after Week 6 (October 17th) and before the NFL's actual trade deadline (October 19th). And if they don't do it then, then the whole thing is just laughable.

| TEAM EDWARDS With all due respect to Twilight and whatever Team Jacob might be, Braylon Edwards' team is the Jets, and the Jets say that Edwards will play on Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins. They also say he won't start. They also say that any discipline over his DWI arrest will be handed down by the league. And according to Chris Mortensen, the league could hand down a suspension, because Edwards had a disorderly conduct conviction prior to joining the Jets. He'll be back in court on November 9th to answer these new charges.

| 2011 | The University of Colorado has approved a move to the Pac-10 in 2011, a year earlier than had been earlier announced. In order to make that happen, the school agreed that Big 12 will withhold nearly $7 million in revenue that the Buffaloes would have received in conference distributions. The Big 12 had been seeking a $9 million penalty. Read More | Meanwhile, Nebraska pays more than $9 million. |
| 1,403... | Congratulations to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have raised the bar on the most strikeouts ever in a season past 1,400 (currently setting it at 1,403). And since this season's not over yet, there's still plenty of time for Mark Reynolds and Co. to keep reaching for the stars. Reynolds has whiffed 201 times so far, which is a mere 22 short of the record he set last year. That was a year after he set the previous record with 204. Read |
| 200 x 80 | Charlotte Motor Speedway is laughing at Jerry Jones and the puny little TV he installed at the Stadium he built in Arlington. Because just in time for next year's Coca-Cola 600, the track will install the world's newest largest HD video board - one that's 200 feet wide and 80 feet tall. That's 16,000 square feet, right there. Read and Watch |

| "He had made statements while playing dominoes shortly after the surgery that he should just kill himself. No one believed he was serious." The Sheriff's report regarding the death of Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley quoted an investigator who reported that McKinley showed signs of depression after his knee surgery one month ago. The report also mentioned that McKinley made statements about not knowing what he would do without football. Read More | "I've always known him as a class person so I have no problem with that." Current Mets manager Jerry Manuel initially had a problem with Dodgers outgoing manager Joe Torre seeming to position himself as a candidate to be the next Mets manager. But after Torre apologized (saying, "It certainly wasn't my intention of doing that and making people believe that I wanted to manage the Mets."), Manuel accepted his apology. But only after the Mets lost to the Marlins in Florida and became officially eliminated from postseason contention. Bring out your dead. Watch |
