| BEARS BEAR DOWN The Bears became the first NFL franchise to win 700 regular season games when they blanked the Dolphins 16-0 in Miami and recorded just the second shutout of this 2010 NFL season. In fact, they recorded just the second shutout of the Dolphins at home in the last 40 seasons. Don't look now, but the 7-3 Bears are only allowing 14.6 points per game this year. That's the fewest in the NFL. And that's their best mark through 10 games since 2006. And 2006 was the year they last went to the Super Bowl.

| "A STUPID DECISION" An attorney for Kenny Rogers said his client knows he made "a stupid decision." That would be the one when he sent a fellow Mississippi State booster a text of Cecil Newton's payment plan to secure his son Cam's commitment to the Bulldogs. "I'm not even sure Kenny completely understands why he did it," said Doug Zeit to The Associated Press. "The best I can tell you is Cecil Newton made a few calls insisting that he do it, so Kenny went ahead and sent the text message." Zeit confirmed Rogers sent the text to Bill Bell requesting $80,000 the day after Cam Newton signed with MSU, $50,000 30 days later and another $50,000 30 days after that. Zeit says no money ever changed hands, and of course Cam later signed with Auburn. And the Newton family's attorney says no money changed hands there either. "I am a million percent certain Cam Newton took no money from no one," he said using hyperbole and a double negative.

| MORE FROM MOORE No. 2 Auburn is off this weekend. (They next play at Alabama next Friday.) And No. 1 Oregon is also off this weekend. (They next play at home against Arizona next Friday.) And No. 3 TCU is also off this weekend. (They next play at New Mexico next Saturday.) But No. 4 Boise State is on this weekend, and in fact on ESPN2 tonight (9:30 ET). They face Fresno State with a 23-game win streak and 34-game regular season win streak on the line. That's tops in the country. Quarterback Kellen Moore leads the charge. He's thrown 36 touchdowns from inside the red zone since 2009 began. That's tops in the country. And Moore's favorite target down deep is not Boise's leading receiver Titus Young. Instead, it's the bigger Austin Pettis. Pettis has been targeted 39 times by Moore in the red zone since 2009, while no other Boise receiver has more than 13 red zone targets in that same time frame. (Might want to figure out how to cover him.)

| COWBOYS TEND TO ROPE COWS The Chicago Bulls have lost three straight and 21 of their last 24 games to the Dallas Mavericks. And the Bulls have lost five straight and 12 of their last 13 in Dallas. That dates all the way back to 1997. (Things that also date all the way back to 1997: Austin Powers, Coldplay, and Harry Potter.) And the only Bulls win in that span was on February 8, 2005. And the only Bulls player who was on the court for that game who will be on the court for this game tonight (9:30 ET on ESPN) is Luol Deng. But the key for the Bulls this time might be who is on the court for the Mavs. Or not. Because when Dirk Nowitzki's on the court, the Mavs outscore their opponents by 13.8 points per 48 minutes. And when he's not, their opponents outscore the Mavs by 23.1 points per 48 minutes.

| 7-7 | The Lightning and the Flyers combined for nine goals through the first period. (That's one shy of the NHL record.) Through the second period, the game was tied 7-7. It was the second game in NHL history that saw two teams score at least 7 goals each through the first two periods. And the previous instance was also a Flyers game, on February 27, 1982 at Calgary. (That game was tied 7-7, and Philadelphia won 9-8). Through three periods, the third career hat trick from Steven Stamkos sealed an 8-7 win for the Lightning. Stamkos a league-high 19 goals in 19 games this season. Recap | Highlights | Box Score |
| 500, 12.6 | Dwight Howard played the 500th game of his NBA career and grabbed his usual dozen rebounds in Orlando's win over Phoenix. He's pulled down more rebounds (6,310 since you asked) than any other active player ever recorded in his first 500 games. Don't hurt yourself - that translates to a 12.6 per game average. That's the highest rebounding average for any player at the 500-game mark since Moses Malone was grabbing them at a 15.0 rate back in 1983. Recap | Highlights | Box Score |
| 3 (46, 15) | Driving toward the finish line of the final race of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, 3 drivers still have a shot at the title. Kevin Harvick is 46 points back, and if he wins it all, that would be the largest deficit ever made up in the final race to win the title. But just 15 points separate leader Denny Hamlin from second-place Jimmie Johnson. It's the closest battle between first and second in Chase history. Johnson can lock up the title if he wins the race and leads the most laps in the race outright. But if Hamlin wins, he would become the 3rd different driver to win an NSCS championship for Joe Gibbs Racing, joining Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart. Remember, Gibbs won Super Bowls with 3 different quarterbacks - Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien. Read More |

| "The guy has been in some games." That's John Fox, the head coach of the 1-8 Carolina Panthers, talking about Brian St. Pierre, the new starter at quarterback for those Panthers on Sunday against the Ravens. The same Brian St. Pierre who has thrown five passes in eight NFL seasons, who wasn't in a training camp this summer, and who was a stay-at-home dad as recently as last week. The University of Hawaii sure looks ready to join the Mountain West Conference for football, which means it sure looks ready to leave the depleted WAC after 32 years. Read More |
