| STEEL RESOLVE The Steelers scored 17 of their 20 first-half points off two turnovers and a blocked punt. They added seven more to start the fourth quarter on a tricky touchdown pass from Antwaan Randle El. (It was tricky, but it wasn't this tricky.) That made it 27-7 before the Bengals roared back (sorry) and made it interesting with 14 unanswered points. And in the end, the Steelers held on because Jordan Shipley could not. That was because he got popped on the last play of the game at the 5-yard line by James Harrison - the same James Harrison who got popped $100k for some brutal hits so far this season. This one was legal, and it came in front of Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was part of the crowd in Cincinnati.

| REPORT: NEWTON CHEATED Last week, ESPN.com reported that a man claiming to represent Auburn quarterback Cam Newton during his recruitment out of Blinn College last year allegedly sought up to $200,000 to secure his signature on a national letter-of-intent. (Newton's father and Auburn have denied any wrongdoing.) This week, FOXSports.com is reporting that Newton was facing possible expulsion from the University of Florida for academic cheating when he transferred to Blinn in the spring of 2009. The 2010 Heisman Trophy front-runner is said to have been caught cheating three times, including putting his name on someone else's paper without that someone's knowledge. (Newton was also arrested and suspended for possession of a stolen laptop at Florida in 2008.) Auburn hosts Georgia on Saturday.

| CAN-DO IN CANCUN The United States beat Costa Rica and advanced to a home-and-home playoff against Italy for a Women's World Cup berth. Abby Wambach scored twice. The second of the two was the 117th of her career.) The USA!USA!USA! is 8-4-1 all-time against Italy, which is ranked 11th in the world (10 spots below the top-ranked USA!USA!USA!). The first leg will be November 20th in Padua (the same Padua that Shakespeare introduced you to). The return leg is November 27 in Bridgeview, Illinois (the same Bridgeview that the Chicago Fire introduced you to). The winner on aggregate advances to Germany next summer.

| KEEP UP WITH THE JONES Dallas fans might be quick to point out that Jerry Jones has fired every coach in the history of the Cowboys. Mark Cuban might be quick to point out to Dallas fans that his Mavericks already have four times as many wins as their Cowboys, and he hasn't fired a coach in more than two years, so why not jump on his bandwagon? Their fourth win of the season was the second loss of the season for the Celtics, who still got 15 assists from Rajon Rondo. He's got five 15-assist games so far this season. The Celtics all-time record for games like that is eight for a whole season (see: Rondo, last season).

| 3-6, 0-5 | The Buffaloes of the University of Colorado are headed to the Pac-10, nay, Pac-12, but head football coach Dan Hawkins doesn't seem to be headed there with them. They're 3-6 so far this season, and 0-5 in the Big 12. The 5th of the 5 came when they blew a 28-point fourth-quarter lead at Kansas. Oops. Hawkins is (was) 19-39 overall at Colorado. An official announcement is expected today. Read More |
| 15/15 | Joakim Noah of the Bulls had 13 points and 19 rebounds in a scrappy win over the Nuggets. 13 is less than 15, but enough to give him 94 points to go along with 90 rebounds through six games this season. And that's enough for him to become the first player in Bulls history to average 15/15 this deep into the season. In fact, the only other active players to do that are Kevin Garnett (see: 2007-08 and 2004-05) and Shaquille O'Neal (see: 1992-93). Recap | Highlights |
| 38 | Henrik Zetterberg scored 1:23 into overtime and earned the Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Coyotes. Zetterberg has 38 game-winning goals since the beginning of the 2005-06 season, which is the third-most by any player in the NHL's post-lockout era, behind Alex Ovechkin's 44 and Dany Heatley's 42. | "This was the toughest win I have ever had, because I could not get too excited. I felt like I was beating my dad." DII Indianapolis blew out 20th-ranked Tennessee by 15 points in, technically, a meaningless college basketball exhibition. But it wasn't so meaningless to Indy coach Stan Gouard, who played under Vols head coach Bruce Pearl when Pearl was the head coach of DII Southern Indiana. Read More | "There are league executives involved and there are former players involved. I think having active players and active front office executives is something the competition committee has always frowned on." Troy Polamalu strongly suggested that Commissioner Roger Goodell include current NFL players in deciding punishment for flagrant hits that merit fines. Commissioner Roger Goodell frowned on that.
