| ROWDY RODDY WHITE Once upon a time (call it "early in the fourth quarter"), the Falcons opened up a 20-7 lead over the Ravens. Later upon a time (call it "with just over a minute left"), the Ravens opened up a 21-20 lead over the Falcons. Even later upon a time (call it "with 20 seconds left") Matt Ryan completed an 80-yard, game-winning drive when he completed a 33-yard, game-winning touchdown pass to Roddy White. It was the second touchdown catch of the game for White, who "just pushed [Josh Wilson] down" (his words, not mine, although mine eyes would have to agree with him) to get free for it and lift Atlanta to the best record in the NFL. (And as it turns out, the answer to the question posed in yesterday's Rundown is yes, you do end up selling high on White, packaging him with a quarterback just before the trade deadline for a couple of very intriguing keeper possibilities and a couple of draft picks, including a second-rounder. Thanks for playing.)

| MEAN GREEN The Celtics are 5-0 this season when scoring at least 100 points. (Yep.) And since they scored 112 against the Heat, that must mean they're 2-0 against Miami this season. (Yep.) And that must mean that Miami is riding their first losing streak of the season, and that they've dropped three of their last four, and that they sit just a game over .500. (Yep, and yep, and yep.) So does that mean we should believe what Dwyane Wade said after a 2-12 night shooting? "We're the best 5-4 team in the league." Well, technically, they're the only 5-4 team in the league, which, to be fair, would also mean they're the worst 5-4 team. But that's just mean. But is that any more mean than Paul Pierce was on Twitter? "It's been a pleasure to bring my talents to south beach now on to Memphis." The Truth hurts.

| BELICHICK AND THE BELLMAN REVISITED UConn's Jordan Todman ran for 222 yards against Pitt, and none were more important than the four he picked up in the fourth quarter. That's because they came on fourth down. And that's because that fourth down came at his own 19-yard line, and because it came when his Huskies held a slim two point lead with three minutes yet to play. Of course, when Bill Belichick finds himself in situations like that, he likes his Patriots to go for it. Patriots fans don't like that he likes it so much (see: at Chargers, Week 7 of this year) (see also: at Colts, Week 10 of last year). But Randy Edsall must like Belichick's thinking more than he likes Belichick's results, because he made the call to give the ball to Todman, and Pitt never touched that ball again. Score it a win thanks to the Bellman Equation. (Which is not to be confused with how Dayton scored a win with their own Bellman equation.)

| BLOWN AWAY While you were sleeping, Tiger Woods was chasing his ball all over windy Melbourne, carding a +1 72 in the second round of the Australian Masters. It left him nine shots behind the leader (meet Adam Bland) and three shots behind Sergio Garcia, who (as it happens) is playing just his third tournament since taking his own extended hiatus from golf.

| 100,000 - 180,000 | In an interview yesterday with ESPN 103.3 in Dallas, Kenny Rogers (no, not that one, but the one who used to play his football at Mississippi State) named the price that the father of Cam Newton was seeking in order for his son to play his football at Mississippi State. "Anywhere between $100,000 and $180,000." Of course, Cam Newton ended up at Auburn, and the top-ranked Tigers insist he's eligible to play (and insist that he will play tomorrow night against Georgia). But another former Mississippi State player (Bill Bell) told ESPN.com Thursday night that Newton's father also contacted him (Bell) asking for money, and an NCAA spokeswoman said, "The solicitation of cash or benefits by a prospective student-athlete or another individual on his or her behalf is not allowed under NCAA rules." | 1 | Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 34 points against the Nuggets. And Pau Gasol scored 17 points and grabbed 20 rebounds against the Nuggets. And the Nuggets just allowed the Pacers to do this on Tuesday. And the Nuggets just sent the Lakers to their 1st loss of the season last night. Wait, what? It's true, so come on down if you had the New Orleans Hornets as the 1 last remaining unbeaten in your pool. Recap | Highlights |
| 33, 0 | The Chase for the Sprint Cup heads to Phoenix this weekend with Jimmie Johnson just 33 points behind Denny Hamlin with two races to go. But the four-time defending champ probably likes his chances. He's won four of the last six races at Phoenix. And he's switched over to Jeff Gordon's top-ranked crew after last week's problems in the pits. But Hamlin probably likes his chances, too. He knows that no driver has ever blown a points lead with two races to go in Chase history. And he also knows he's coming off a win in Texas. (But he also knows he's never finished better than third at Phoenix.) Preview | Meanwhile, Here Comes Travis Pastrana |

| "No." "Eh." Brett Favre sat down with the NFL Network and was asked straight out whether he will come back next season. (And so it begins.) He was also asked whether he was still thinking about making it back to the Super Bowl. (And so it ends?) Favre Talks | Meanwhile, So Does Sterger | "I have no idea. I'd like to think it would [get done], but I don't know." Derek Jeter doesn't have a job. And he doesn't know when he might. His old boss, Brian Cashman, doesn't seem to know either. "Those discussions have started, and over the course of this winter we'll find a way to get something done." Read More |
