| NON-WALKER, TEXAS RANGER In Game 1 against the Rays, Cliff Lee didn't walk anybody and struck out 10. Then in Game 5 against the Rays, Cliff Lee didn't walk anybody and struck out 11. To save you some math, that's 21 K and 0 BB for the series. That shattered the record for most strikeouts without a walk in a postseason series. (Sorry, Kevin Millwood and your paltry 14 K.) In fact, Lee has now won four postseason games in the past two years when he didn't walk anybody and struck out at least 10. Only two other guys ever have won even one postseason game like that in any year (see: Sterling Hitchcock - 1998 Padres, Deacon Phillippe - 1903 Pirates). To celebrate, the Rangers doused him with champagne. But they saved the ginger ale for Josh Hamilton, out of respect for his battles with substance abuse in the past. (But still, it was Canada Dry. So, you know, the imported good stuff.) Next up - the Yankees on Friday night.

| HEAT NEED SOME ICY HOT The Miami Heat started their game against CSKA Moscow without one-third of their big three, since Dwyane Wade is still nursing a painful hamstring (albeit one that coach Eric Spoelstra now calls "virtually pain-free"). They finished the game without two-thirds of the three, after LeBron James begged out of the third quarter with leg cramps. Still, he put up 22 points in 26 minutes. Which was 5 more points than Chris Bosh put up in 34 minutes. But only 2 more points than Trajan Langdon put up in 34 minutes off the bench for CSKA. That's right, the Alaskan Assassin. (Icy Hot.)

| THE YIPS Brandon Yip of the Avalanche scored against the Red Wings in the sixth round of the shootout. It was his first-ever goal in a shootout. And it was the game-winner. And it meant that Colorado has won both of their games this season in OT and now in a shootout. And it confirmed that the Yips never phone it in.

| CALVIN CLEAN? Calvin Johnson's touchdown catch-that-actually-wasn't against the Bears in Week 1 might become the touchdown catch-that-actually-was next season. The league expects to review that rule when the competition committee meets after the Super Bowl. Committee co-chairman Rich McKay says "there's a definite conflict. We have to go back and look if we extended it too far."

| 30+ | Former agent Josh Luchs tells Sports Illustrated that he paid college football players in an attempt to gain clients early in his career. Luchs estimates he paid more than 30 players from 1990-96, including former No. 2 pick Ryan Leaf. Leaf declined comment to the magazine. But seven former players confirmed taking money from Luchs. Others, including Jets receiver Santonio Holmes, denied Luchs' story. Luchs added that other agents use media contacts, including ESPN draft insider Mel Kiper Jr., to help recruit players. Kiper denied playing any role in recruiting players, and said, "Conversations with players, which are occasionally facilitated by agents, are a valuable way to get to know the players. These conversations have never compromised my integrity, and my 32-year record supports that." Read More | Read the Original Story |
| 1995 | Longtime readers of The Rundown will be reminded that yesterday, Rangers fans were reminded that their team had never won a playoff series. Which means that it's now time for Memphis Grizzlies fans to be reminded that their team is now the oldest current franchise (in any of the four major North American team sports leagues not called MLS) that has never won a playoff series. The Grizzlies entered the NBA in 1995 up in Vancouver. They didn't actually make the playoffs until they made it to Memphis, but since then, they've been there three times, most recently in 2006. | 250,000+ | Tommie Smith, the sprinter who raised his black-gloved fist atop the medal stand in Mexico City and became an icon, is auctioning off the red running shoes he wore in that 200m race (who knew they used velcro?) as well as the gold medal he won after it. (But not the glove. That seems to be lost.) Opening bid is $250,000. Plus, there's always the 20% buyer's premium to add to that. But get your bids in now - the auction closes on November 4th. | "I know he's kind of frustrated he's not getting a chance to crack the three position, especially since we're going three guards, so I told him I'd go ahead and fake an injury or say something's wrong with me so you can start." It was to be the first home game for Gilbert Arenas since his 50-game suspension last season. But it wasn't to be because of an injury that wasn't? Read More | Highlights | "It's kind of like the 'Get Smart' cone of silence. That's when you kind of get things done. So I think you get things done when it's quiet, and it's been quiet. So that's the way we want to move forward." Colts owner Jim Irsay is talking about not talking about getting a new deal done for Peyton Manning. One that would likely make him the highest paid player in the NFL. Read More |
