| QUINTESSENTIAL FAVRE, DEEP SIXED It was a (dark and stormy Monday) night when Brett Favre went over 70,000 passing yards. (In his career, not in the game, because that would have been a record. Check that, still a record.) It was the same night he threw three second-half touchdown passes, including career No. 500, which was career No. 1 to Randy Moss. So then why weren't the Vikings able to beat the Jets for the first time since 1979? Probably because Brett Favre also fumbled three times (losing two) to pass Warren Moon for the most of those in NFL history (163). But mostly probably because Brett Favre had the Vikings in position for a come-from-behind win only to throw a pick-six to Dwight Lowery that sealed a 1-3 start to the season. Because sometimes you eat the camel...

| YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN, AND AGAIN After the Patriots sent Randy Moss back home to Minnesota (the team that drafted him in 1998), they went out and brought Deion Branch back home to New England (the team that drafted him in 2002) from Seattle in exchange for a fourth-round pick. The Seahawks picked him up four years ago in exchange for a first-round pick from the Patriots, but he only spent one fully healthy season up in the northwest. Back in the northeast, they're hoping a return to Tom Brady means a return to form for Branch, who was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIX. (That's a lot of X's. Call it Zzzix. Or just thirty-nine.)

| BETTER TO BE GIANT THAN BRAVE You might remember that the last time the Giants played in the NLCS, they beat the Braves to get there. Better make that the last two times, after a 3-2 win in Game 4 in (less than sold-out) Atlanta sent Braves manager Bobby Cox into the off-season of his career. It's a sadly familiar ending for Cox, whose Braves have now lost six straight postseason series. (That's only tied for the fourth-longest streak all-time. And, since you asked, the longest streak all-time is 10, since the Cubs can now look back on a full century of futility, dating back to 1910.) And those Braves have now lost eight straight potential elimination games at home. That's the longest streak of all-time. (Go Cubs!)

| ROAD RULES The Rays beat out the Yankees to win the AL East and the home-field advantage that went with it. That was helpful, since the road team in their series with the Rangers has gone out and won each of the first four games of the five-game series. So ahead of Game 5 tonight (8:07 ET), just a friendly reminder that the road team has never won every game of a series. And yet, just another friendly reminder that Game 5 is a rematch in Florida of Game 1 between Cliff Lee and David Price (obviously won by Lee and Texas - please try to pay attention). And yet, just another friendly reminder that Rangers fans have never ever seen a playoff series win, which covers more than 55 thousand innings of baseball and 22 losing seasons since the team moved to Texas. (That's bad, of course. But I would direct you to the Cubs note above.)

| 1+1 | With that 37-yard touchdown grab for the Vikings in the third quarter, Randy Moss (formerly of the Patriots) has now touched down for two different teams against one team (the Jets) this same season. He's the first guy to do that since 1989 (see: Herschel Walker as a Cowboy and a Viking against the Giants.) Moss is also only the second player ever to catch a touchdown pass from both Brett Favre and Tom Brady. The other was Terry Glenn, who caught the first touchdown toss of Brady's pro career in 2001 before moving on to the Packers, where he caught two touchdown passes from Favre the next year. | 2,504 | All four games of series between the Giants and Braves were decided by 1 run. That's never, ever happened before. For Bobby Cox, it meant that he now walks away with more wins (2,504) than anyone ever not named LaRussa (2,638), McGraw (2,763), or Mack (3,731). But at least after 29 years, 14 division titles, and 5 National League pennants, he walks away with a World Series ring. Bobby Cox's Emotional Goodbye | Remembering the 1995 World Series |
| 8 | Alex Ovechkin scored with 31.1 seconds left in overtime to give the Capitals a 3-2 win over the Senators. It was Ovechkin's 8th overtime goal in his 6 seasons in the NHL. That ties him with Saku Koivu and Daniel Sedin for the most overtime tallies over that span. Should they be called "skate-off goals"? Discuss.) Recap | Highlights |

| "If you want to talk about what happened in the football game tonight, I'd love to." After the loss to the Jets, Brett Favre didn't want to talk about the NFL investigation into his conduct. Even when asked directly. But if you want to talk about what happened in the game, he'd love to. Read | "The short story is that quite honestly there was a mistake on the part of the Police Department. The entire incident is an unfortunate mistake." Sometimes, the police are wrong when they handcuff a Bengal. (Sometimes.) Read |
